Cerbaiona Rosso di Montalcino 2022

The best compliment to this wine came from another winemaker in Montalcino, one who has won prizes around the world, who said ‘’I would never be able to make a red like this one, the commander is always a master’’. The ruby color is intense and intact without being dark, while the aroma, after an initial attack that is slightly balsamic, shifts towards ripe red fruits like sour cherry, marasca cherry and blackberry, with a light spicy touch of cumin and cinnamon. The mouthfeel is magnificent, rich, intense, progressive with youthful tannins and a streak of freshness that give it drinkability. The finish is persistent, consistent and broad.

Cerbaiona is a small but highly regarded Brunello di Montalcino producer of the Toscana wine region, Italy. Cerbaiona’s Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino wines are considered to be some of the very best in Montalcino. Toscana IGT wines are made under the M.L. Fioretti label.

Diego Molinari purchased the Cerbaiona estate with his wife, Nora, in the late 1970s, on his retirement. In 2015, with Molinari in his 80s the estate was purchased by a group of investors including venture capitalist Gary Rieschel and the current manager, Matthew Fioretti.

Brunello di Montalcino’s understudy, Rosso di Montalcino is a title for Sangiovese wines produced in more immediately approachable form than its grander stablemate.

Rosso di Montalcino is a denomination for red wines made from the Sangiovese grape and found in the same defined area as the famed Brunello di Montalcino DOCG of central southern Tuscany. The DOC was created in 1984 in order to make the most of the fruit from younger vines of new plantings.
