Domaine Jamet Cote Rotie 2022

Domaine Jamet is a reference point in Côte-Rôtie. Their holdings read like a “who’s who” of top vineyard sites in the AOC, including names like Fongeant, Chavaroche, Les Moutonnes, La Landonne, Côte Blonde, Côte Rozier, and Côte Brune. Like Chave in Hermitage, he generally likes to blend all all the sites together to present a wine that is a truly complete Côte-Rôtie, taking advantage of all that the different terroirs have to offer. (He does reserve a tiny number of berries for a separate Côte Brune bottling that is rarely seen.)

This practice of blending vineyard sites is an old tradition in the Northern Rhone, consistent with Jamet’s general approach in the winery. His Côte-Rôtie is almost all whole cluster. He uses no barriques, opting instead for the larger demi-muids. The other big names who made wines like this in Côte-Rôtie have either retired (Gentaz) or changed course (Guigal). Jamet — specifically Jean-Paul Jamet, who’s been at it since he was a 16 year old boy in 1976 — has stuck it out.

Critical Acclaim

95 James Suckling

A velvety, balanced and textural Cote-Rotie with lots of crunch. Notes of dark cherries, spiced plums, dried herbs, stones and peppercorns. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Lively and bright with tension. Full of vitality and transparency with a long, precise finish.

95 Jeb Dunnuck

As is normal at this domaine, I was able to taste the 2022 Côte Rôtie as multiple components from throughout the appellation. All the barrels rated between 93-97 and have classic Jamet character, with medium to full-bodied richness, plenty of tannins, and the riper, richer style of this sunnier vintage. I think it’s going to be a step up over the 2021, but it will require patience.

94 Wine Advocate

Vinified with 100% whole bunches, the 2022 Cote Rotie from Jean-Paul & Corinne Jamet reveals a dense, deep and complex bouquet of violets, mulberries, flowers, ripe dark wild berries and licorice, all accented by delicate spicy undertones. Medium to full-bodied, dense and structured, it’s tense, with a fleshy core of fruit for a Côte Rôtie and a long, spicy and fruity finish. This vintage stands out with its vibrant, succulent acidity, lending an ethereal quality to the wine and making it less austere than previous vintages.
