Kopke Vintage Port 1994
Kopke is the oldest Port house, founded in 1638. It also produces a range of Douro DOC table wines.
The business was founded by Nicolau Köpke, the Consul General of the Hamseatic League. He shipped his first wine bottles back to North Europe two years after first moving from Hamburg to Portugal.
Vintage Port is the most expensive and prestigious member of the Port family. Though accounting for just a fraction of total Port production, Vintage Port is the Douro’s flagship style, produced only from a single vineyard in an exceptional year.
A Vintage is “declared” in only when both the quality and quantity of the available fruit align. Samples are submitted to the Institute of Douro and Porto Wine in January, two years after harvest. After tested and tasted for quality assessment, vintage declarations are made by the end of June.
