Pinhook Bourbon 4yr Bourbon Garrett Oliver Collaboration #2
The second edition in Pinhook’s Collaboration Series, Pinhook partnered with Garrett Oliver, brewmaster of Brooklyn Brewery and 2014 James Beard award winner. The release consists of 20 barrels that were distilled by Still Austin Whiskey Co. and aged in Texas for 4 years. A total of 3,486 bottles were produced, and proceeds will fund 20 scholarships in brewing and distilling to people of color through the Michael J. Jackson foundation, of which Oliver is a chair. More information can be found in the company’s press release.
The whiskey is only 4 years old, but you would never guess that based on its color and taste. It’s exceptionally dark in color, and as a result appears almost “heavy” in the glass. Likely the result of spending four years aging in Texas heat, this intensity translates to the whiskey’s flavor profile. On the nose the whiskey leads with a slew of savory aromas that include burnt oak, cherrywood, and cigar box. Tobacco, graham cracker, smoky wood, and a touch of chocolate comprise the palate, which is rich with a deliciously chewy mouthfeel. Spice and sweet flavors of maple sugar candy and caramel chews develop in the finish and cap off the sip. It might only be 4 years old (which is shocking once you taste it), but this whiskey gets everything right from start to finish making for a fantastic limited edition whiskey from Pinhook.
